Greater Lafayette Resistance Fair

Facebook Event Page

Greater Lafayette Indivisible is hosting a Resistance Fair with the theme “Get Involved. Be Informed. Find Your Place.” The fair, which marks the end of the first year of the Trump presidency, will feature speakers discussing the damaging effects of the administration on a wide range of issues, including healthcare, immigrant rights, and foreign policy. The fair will include food, drinks, and activities as well as an opportunity for the public to learn about local organizations. The event is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring canned goods to support the local Food Finders Food Bank.

Greater Lafayette Indivisible is a local 501c(4) non-partisan organization committed to civic engagement as a way to promote participatory democracy. Our goals include holding our elected officials accountable to constituents rather than to their national political party or outside interests, increasing voter participation, and promoting justice, equality and inclusion. GLI is one of almost 6000 local groups in the national Indivisible movement fighting for health coverage, registering American voters, and demystifying congressional advocacy.

Save DACA Rally

Our friends over at Indiana Undocumented Youth Alliance, Greater Lafayette Immigrant Allies, and Greater Lafayette ACLU put on a great rally to support DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients. We were not the organizers of the event, but many of us attended. There are personal stories that dreamers tell during the rally that everyone should hear.

A little synopsis of what DACA is:
DACA allows certain children of undocumented immigrants to apply to receive consideration of deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal. They are also eligible for work authorization. These allows these individuals the ability to live and work in the United States without fear of deportation during that period. This program does not confer US citizenship status.

For many the US is the only country they have every know. Many started lives and families here. These are our friends, family, and members of the community and we should stand to protect them. We as a country made them a promise. We should uphold that promise. Trump is rumored to be ending the program. He needs to make a decision by September 5th.

Please call your representatives and tell them to defend DACA and codify it into law.

As a bonus GLIA put together a great informational card that is scanned and posted here:

Boiler Bridge Bash 2017

We attended the Boiler Bridge Bash 2017 to let people know about us, but more importantly to register voters. It was a lot of fun, and for our first real public outing; it went surprisingly well. We managed to register 65 people! Not too shabby! Let’s hope we continue to grow that number heading into 2018.
